This report from the U.S. Department of Justice's Office of Justice ProgramsBureau of Justice Statistics examines the post-release offending 20 patterns of former prisoners and their involvement in criminal activity both within and outside of the 10 state where they were imprisoned.

The report cites that the 401,288 state prisoners released in 2005 had an estimated 1,994,000 arrests during the 9-year period, an average of 5 arrests per released prisoner. Further, 5 in 6 (83%) state prisoners released in 2005 across 30 states were arrested at least once during the 9 years following their release and 4 in 9 (44%) prisoners released in 2005 were arrested at least once during their first year after release.
